Juicy Air Fryer Turkey Burgers

Juicy Air Fryer Turkey Burgers: Quick, Healthy & Flavorful!

Are you searching for a healthy, delicious, and incredibly easy meal that comes together in a flash? Look no further than these **Air Fryer Turkey Burgers!** Tender, remarkably juicy, and packed with a delightful blend of seasonings, these burgers redefine what a weeknight meal can be. Forget about firing up the grill or heating your kitchen with the stove; these perfect patties are ready in just 20 minutes thanks to the magic of your air fryer. They’re an ideal solution for those busy evenings when you crave a hearty meal without the fuss.

As a huge fan of a good turkey burger, I practically live on them during the warmer months. While I often opt for the outdoor grill for recipes like these spicy jalapeño turkey burgers, some days the weather simply doesn’t cooperate. Cold, rainy, or overly hot days can make outdoor grilling unappealing. This is where the air fryer truly shines, allowing you to enjoy perfectly cooked, juicy burgers year-round, regardless of the elements outside. With the help of a trusty meat thermometer, achieving that ideal internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) without overcooking becomes virtually foolproof, ensuring every bite is moist and delicious.

If you love experimenting with burger alternatives, you’ll also adore these air fryer salmon patties and air fryer chicken patties. They offer similar convenience and flavor, served up beautifully on your favorite burger bun or lettuce wrap.

Why You’ll Fall in Love with This Air Fryer Turkey Burger Recipe

  • Unbeatable Speed & Simplicity: In just 20 minutes from start to finish, these burgers are on your plate. There’s no lengthy chilling time for the patties, and the air fryer’s efficiency means less waiting. You’ll spend a mere 5-7 minutes mixing ingredients and forming patties, followed by approximately 13 minutes of hands-off air frying. It’s the ultimate solution for busy weeknights or when unexpected cravings strike.
  • Consistently Moist & Juicy Results: Turkey and chicken burgers often get a bad rap for being dry. Poultry needs to reach an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) for food safety, but exceeding this can quickly lead to tough, dry meat. Our secret? A touch of olive oil added directly to the burger mixture. This simple addition significantly boosts moisture content, ensuring every bite is tender and flavorful, never dry or crumbly.
  • Say Goodbye to Bland Turkey Burgers: If you’ve ever had a turkey burger that lacked flavor, this recipe is here to change your mind! While it features classic seasonings like salt, pepper, garlic powder, and dried herbs such as basil and oregano, the combination creates an incredibly savory and satisfying profile. These generously seasoned patties offer a robust flavor that can easily stand up to, or even surpass, many beef burgers. Prepare to be amazed by the depth of flavor!
  • Healthier Burger Option: Ground turkey is naturally leaner than many cuts of ground beef, making these air fryer turkey burgers a fantastic choice for a lighter, healthier meal. The air fryer also cooks with minimal added fat, further contributing to a guilt-free dining experience.
  • Minimal Cleanup: One of the greatest advantages of using an air fryer is the incredibly easy cleanup. No splattering grease on the stove or scrubbing a grill grate. The air fryer basket is typically non-stick and a breeze to wash, letting you enjoy your meal without dreading the aftermath.

Key Ingredients for Perfectly Juicy Air Fryer Turkey Burgers

Crafting the perfect turkey burger starts with understanding each ingredient’s role. Here’s a detailed look at what you’ll need and why:

Overhead view of ingredients to make air fryer turkey burgers.
  • Ground Turkey: I typically opt for extra lean ground turkey (93% or 99% lean) to keep these burgers on the healthier side. However, you can use any type of ground turkey – whether it’s all white meat or a mix of dark and white meat. If you prefer, ground chicken is an excellent substitute and will yield similar delicious results. The key is to ensure it’s fresh and well-chilled before mixing.
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Since leaner ground turkey varieties have a lower fat content, adding a tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil is crucial. This not only contributes to the flavor but, more importantly, keeps the burgers incredibly moist and juicy as they cook. You can use another type of oil like avocado or grapeseed if you prefer. If your ground turkey already has a higher fat content (e.g., 85% lean), you might consider reducing or even omitting the added oil.
  • Egg: Even though ground turkey can be somewhat moist, a large egg acts as a vital binder. It helps hold the patties together, preventing them from crumbling during mixing, shaping, and cooking. This ensures your burgers maintain their structure and are easy to handle.
  • Panko Crumbs: Panko crumbs are a game-changer for binding these turkey burgers. Unlike regular breadcrumbs, panko is lighter, flakier, and more absorbent, resulting in a patty that holds its shape beautifully and doesn’t become too dense. While you can use regular breadcrumbs as a substitute, be aware that your turkey patties might be slightly wetter or stickier, requiring a bit more careful handling. For a gluten-free option, look for gluten-free panko crumbs or a small amount of almond flour (note: almond flour will make the mixture stickier).
  • Seasonings (Dried Oregano, Dried Basil, Garlic Powder, Salt, Pepper): This carefully chosen blend of common seasonings transforms plain ground turkey into a flavour powerhouse. Don’t underestimate the importance of generous seasoning, as ground poultry can often lack inherent flavor. Feel free to customize this blend with your favorite dried herbs and spices, such as onion powder, smoked paprika, or a pinch of red pepper flakes for a kick. Just remember that robust seasoning is key to avoiding a bland burger!

Mastering Air Fryer Turkey Burgers: Step-by-Step Guide

Cooking these delicious turkey burgers in the air fryer is incredibly simple. Follow these steps for perfect results every time:

  1. Preheat Your Air Fryer: Begin by preheating your air fryer to 350°F (175°C) for 4 minutes. Preheating ensures even cooking and a nice sear on the outside of your burgers, preventing them from drying out from a cold start.
  2. Ingredients to make turkey burgers in a glass bowl.
  3. Mix the Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground turkey, panko crumbs, egg, extra virgin olive oil, dried oregano, dried basil, garlic powder, kosher salt, and ground black pepper. Use a fork or your hands to gently mix all the ingredients until they are just combined and the seasonings are evenly incorporated. **Important:** Avoid overmixing, as this can lead to tough, dense burgers.
  4. Burger ingredients mixed together in a glass bowl with a fork.
  5. Form the Patties: Divide the turkey mixture into four equal portions. Using your hands or a burger press, form each portion into a patty approximately 4 inches (10 cm) in diameter and about 1/2-inch (1.25 cm) thick. Making them uniform in size ensures they cook evenly. A slight indentation in the center of each patty can help prevent them from puffing up in the middle.
  6. Air Fry to Perfection: Carefully place the formed patties into the preheated air fryer basket. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need to cook them in batches to avoid overcrowding, which can lead to uneven cooking. Air fry at 350°F (175°C) for 8 minutes. Then, flip the burgers and continue to air fry for another 4-5 minutes, or until the internal temperature of each burger reaches 165°F (74°C) when measured with a meat thermometer. This is the critical step for both food safety and achieving perfect juiciness.
  7. Four turkey burger patties in an air fryer basket.
  8. Serve Immediately: Once cooked, remove the turkey burgers from the air fryer and serve them hot with your favorite burger buns and an array of delicious toppings.

Elevate Your Meal: Delicious Turkey Burger Toppings

The beauty of a burger lies in its versatility, and these air fryer turkey burgers are no exception. The right toppings can transform your meal, adding layers of texture, flavor, and freshness. Here are some fantastic options:

  • Classic Freshness: Crisp lettuce, ripe tomato slices, and thinly sliced red onion are timeless choices that provide a refreshing crunch and vibrant color. For a delightful twist, try pickled red onion – its tangy bite perfectly complements the savory turkey.
  • Tangy & Zesty Additions: Don’t underestimate the power of a good pickle or a dollop of sweet or savory relish. These condiments add a much-needed pop of acidity and flavor that brightens the entire burger.
  • Creamy Indulgence: Slices of creamy avocado or a generous scoop of homemade guacamole bring a rich, buttery texture and healthy fats to your burger.
  • Essential Condiments: No burger is complete without the classics: ketchup, mustard (Dijon or yellow), smoky BBQ sauce, and creamy mayonnaise. Experiment with different brands to find your perfect match.
  • Homemade Sauce Adventures: Elevate your burger experience with homemade condiments like this cashew mayo for a dairy-free option, a vibrant chipotle dip for a smoky kick, or a zesty jalapeño dip for a bit of heat.
  • Melted Cheese Perfection: Cheese is undeniably a must-have for many burger lovers. Some fantastic choices that pair wonderfully with turkey include sharp cheddar, creamy Monterey Jack, nutty Jarlsberg, or crumbled salty feta for a Mediterranean flair. Add the cheese slice during the last minute of air frying for a perfect melt!
  • Hearty Veggie Boost: For added nutrients and flavor, consider sautéed spinach and mushrooms. These soft, savory additions complement the turkey beautifully and increase your vegetable intake.
  • Air-Fried Accompaniments: We particularly love topping our burgers with these perfectly tender and caramelized air fryer mushrooms and onions, adding another layer of deep umami flavor.

Frequently Asked Questions About Air Fryer Turkey Burgers

What’s the best temperature for air frying turkey burgers?

Turkey burgers achieve optimal results when air fried at 350°F (175°C). This temperature is ideal because it’s high enough to create a nice golden-brown exterior and ensure the internal temperature reaches a safe 165°F (74°C) without burning the outside. I’ve conducted tests at 400°F (200°C), and found that while the exterior browned quickly, the interior often remained undercooked, leading to an undesirable texture contrast.

How long do you cook turkey burgers in the air fryer?

At 350°F (175°C), these turkey burgers typically cook in about 12-13 minutes. However, cooking times can vary slightly depending on your specific air fryer model, its wattage, and how thick your patties are. If you skip the preheating step, you’ll generally need to add a few extra minutes to the cooking time. The most reliable method to confirm doneness is to use a digital meat thermometer. Once the internal temperature of each turkey burger registers 165°F (74°C), they are safe to eat and perfectly cooked. Remember to check each burger individually, especially if they vary slightly in size.

Do you need to flip burgers in the air fryer?

While many foods air fry beautifully without flipping due to the circulating hot air, I highly recommend flipping turkey burgers halfway through the cooking process. Flipping ensures that both sides brown evenly and develop a nice crust, contributing to a more appealing appearance and consistent texture. It helps prevent one side from becoming overly crisp while the other remains pale.

Can you make these burgers in advance and freeze them?

Absolutely! Preparing and freezing raw turkey burger patties is an excellent meal prep strategy. To do so, wrap each raw patty individually in plastic wrap to prevent freezer burn and sticking. Arrange the wrapped patties in a single layer on a baking sheet and place them in the freezer until completely solid. Once frozen, transfer them to an airtight freezer-safe container or bag. They will maintain their quality in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Can you air fry turkey burgers from frozen?

Yes, you certainly can air fry turkey burgers directly from a frozen state! Simply add an additional 3-5 minutes to the total air frying time, or until a meat thermometer confirms they have reached an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C). There’s no need to thaw them beforehand, making this an even quicker meal solution.

Can you use ground beef for this recipe?

This recipe is quite versatile, and you can definitely adapt it for ground beef. Just follow the exact same recipe instructions for mixing and forming the patties. Air fry the ground beef burgers at the same temperature (350°F or 175°C) and for roughly the same amount of time. The main difference will be the desired internal temperature for doneness; beef burgers should reach a minimum internal temperature of 160°F (71°C) for medium-well, or adjust to your preferred level of doneness.

What should you serve with turkey burgers?

The possibilities for sides are endless! For a light option, a simple green salad or a handful of crispy potato chips are perfect. When you’re looking for something more substantial, these burgers pair wonderfully with air fryer potato wedges, air fryer potato slices, or even air fryer sweet potato wedges. Other fantastic accompaniments include a refreshing mayo-free coleslaw and succulent air fryer corn on the cob.

Pro Tips for the Best Air Fryer Turkey Burgers

  • Air Fryer Size Matters: For this recipe, I used a Cosori 5.8-quart basket air fryer, which comfortably accommodated all four burgers at once. If your air fryer is smaller (e.g., 3-4 quarts), you may need to cook the burgers in two batches to ensure they have enough space for proper air circulation and even cooking. Overcrowding can lead to steamed, rather than air-fried, results.
  • Gluten-Free Adaptation: Making these burgers gluten-free is simple. Substitute regular panko crumbs with gluten-free panko crumbs, which are widely available. Alternatively, you can use a small amount of almond flour, but be aware that almond flour tends to make the burger patties very sticky, so handle with care. Always double-check that all your seasonings are certified gluten-free as well.
  • Handling Sticky Burgers: If your burger mixture feels a bit sticky or difficult to shape, don’t worry! A helpful trick is to use parchment paper to assist in forming the patties. You can also refrigerate the mixture for 30 minutes before shaping and cooking; chilling helps the mixture firm up, making it easier to work with.
  • Non-Stick Air Fryer Basket: My air fryer basket features a reliable non-stick coating, so I didn’t need to spray it with oil before adding the burgers. However, if your air fryer basket doesn’t have a non-stick surface, it’s a good idea to lightly mist it with cooking oil (like olive or avocado oil spray) to prevent the burgers from sticking.
  • Don’t Skip the Preheat: While not strictly mandatory, preheating your air fryer for a few minutes significantly improves the cooking process. It ensures the air fryer is at the optimal temperature from the moment the burgers go in, helping them to cook more evenly, develop a better crust, and often reducing the overall cooking time by a few minutes. If you skip preheating, expect to add a couple of extra minutes to achieve desired doneness.
  • Always Check Internal Temperature: For food safety and the best texture, always ensure your turkey burgers reach an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C). Invest in a reliable instant-read meat thermometer and insert it into the thickest part of the patty. This takes out all the guesswork and guarantees perfectly cooked, juicy burgers every single time.

Description

Air Fryer Turkey Burgers are tender, juicy and packed with flavour. They’re ready in 20 minutes and perfect for days when you don’t want to turn on your stove or break out the grill to cook burgers!

Ingredients

  • 1 pound extra lean ground turkey
  • 1/4 cup panko crumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 2 teaspoons dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 4 burger buns
  • Toppings of choice

Instructions

  1. Preheat your air fryer on 350F for 4 minutes.
  2. Add all of the burger ingredients to a large bowl and use a fork to mix together until the seasonings are incorporated. (Be sure not to over mix as this will make the burgers tough).
  3. Use your hands or a burger press to form the ground turkey mixture into 4 equal patties (they will be about 4 inches in diameter and about 1/2-inch thick).
  4. Carefully place them in the preheated air fryer basket and air fry on 350F for 8 minutes. Flip the burgers and air fry for another 4-5 minutes, or until the internal temperature of each burger reaches 165F. Use a meat thermometer to check for doneness.
  5. Serve immediately with your favourite toppings.

Notes

  1. I used a Cosori 5.8 quart basket air fryer for this recipe so it was large enough to air fry all four burgers at the same time. If your air fryer is smaller, you will need to air fry the burgers two at a time.
  2. If your basket doesn’t have a non-stick coating, you should spray it with some oil.
  3. For ground turkey with a higher fat content, you can try leaving the tablespoon of oil out of the burger mixture.
  4. Instead of panko crumbs, you can use regular bread crumbs or almond flour. Just note that this will make the burger patties a bit sticky.
  5. If your burgers are sticky, you can use parchment paper to help shape them or refrigerate them for 30 minutes before adding them to the air fryer.
  6.  If you don’t preheat your air fryer, you will need to add a few minutes to the cook time.
  7. Be sure to check out the other sections above the recipe card for more detailed advice and suggestions for making this recipe.
